Just the Basics

Background

Orthodontics is one of nine dental specialties formally recognized by the American Dental Association. It is considered the first specialty of dentistry, originating over one hundred years ago. Evidence of intentional tooth movement, however, dates back more than three thousand years.

In recent times, orthodontics has come to include dentofacial orthopedics—together they comprise the study and treatment of misaligned teeth and malocclusions (improper bites). Orthodontic treatment can involve moving teeth, as well as modifying jaw growth or jaw position.

Forefront

Dentists who complete a two-year orthodontic residency from an accredited program are considered orthodontists. They are recognized specialists at the forefront of those who merely “do orthodontics” as an add-on service.

All orthodontists are expected to focus their services solely on orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics, rather
than providing other dental procedures.

Besides receiving a specialty certificate, some orthodontists also earn a Master of Science (MS) degree above and
beyond their degree in dentistry (DDS or DMD).  Through a series of rigorous examinations and case
presentations, even fewer orthodontists achieve additional certification by the American Board of Orthodontists
(Diplomate status) as well.

Movement

Orthodontics is the process of gently moving teeth into better alignment and improving the way teeth fit together. Orthodontics may also involve modification in the development and relationship of the jaws. Ultimately, orthodontics seeks to enhance esthetics and function, thereby promoting greater dental and general wellness.

Advances in diagnostic and bio-materials technology have transformed orthodontics from what it was just twenty years ago. Increased convenience and comfort means orthodontics is far more accepted today.

Options

Orthodontics often includes limited, interceptive, multi-phase, comprehensive, and inter-disciplinary options. In addition, these options may include various techniques, technologies, philosophies, or modalities.

In recent years, the number of orthodontic “systems” has multiplied greatly, and marketing has intensified proportionately–often leaving patients confused about what is best for them.

At COS, we do not ascribe to any single orthodontic option or modality. Rather, we incorporate many approaches and tailor treatment to the individual.

Getting Started

You do not need a referral from your dentist to see us for an evaluation.  Many of our patients come to us through family and friends.  Simply contact us and request a complimentary Initial Consultation.

Visits

Initial Consultation. Involves an evaluation with the orthodontist, assessing teeth alignment, occlusion, jaw relationship, and expected development. We discuss any concerns you or your dentist may have, and provide a plan of action. Allow about 60 minutes.

Observation. If treatment is not recommended yet, we often like to monitor dental and jaw development. The appropriate timing of treatment can be very important to the outcome. These brief visits occur every 6 to 12 months.

Placement. This involves the placement of braces or some other device to guide development, align the teeth, or improve the bite. These visits take approximately 30 to 90 minutes and occur at the beginning of, and occasionally during, treatment.

Treatment. These involve periodic adjustments to the braces or other devices to provide the desired changes. We monitor progress and adjust our treatment plan accordingly. Each takes between 10 and 40 minutes and occur at 4 to 8 week intervals.

Removal. The braces or orthodontic devices are removed or discontinued, and we take “after” records.  It typically takes 30 to 75 minutes depending on the orthodontic devices involved.

Retention. Here we check the integrity of the retainers and monitor the stability of our results.  Generally, we provide 4 to 5 brief visits over a 2 year period.
